About Rowville Nature Reserve

Rowville Nature Reserve is a 112-hectare protected natural area located in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria. It features a mixture of remnant native bushland, including important grassy woodlands and wetlands, providing habitat for a variety of indigenous flora and fauna. The reserve is an important refuge for native birds, mammals, and reptiles, as well as numerous wildflowers and native tree species. Historically, the area was part of the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people, and the reserve conserves some of the native plant communities representative of the region prior to urban development. Visitors can enjoy several walking tracks through varied landscapes, offering opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and quiet reflection in a natural setting. The reserve also plays a role in local conservation efforts and community education on preserving native ecosystems. While it is relatively small compared to large national parks, Rowville Nature Reserve provides accessible outdoor recreation space close to Melbourne’s suburban areas. Its trails are mostly easy to moderate, making it suitable for families, casual hikers, and nature enthusiasts. The natural wetlands within the reserve add to its ecological value, supporting amphibians and aquatic plants. Overall, the reserve offers an opportunity to experience native bushland and wildlife within a short distance of urban life.
